Your Wi-Fi Is Not Slow, Your House Is: A Practical Network Fix

Before paying for a faster plan, fix the three things that cause almost every dead zone, buffering stream and dropped call at home.

Most people respond to bad home internet by upgrading their plan. In a large majority of homes, the plan was never the problem. The signal is losing a fight with architecture, interference and an old router, and none of those improve when the number on the bill goes up.

Step one: find out what you are actually paying for

Run a speed test with a computer connected by cable directly to the router. That number is what your provider delivers. Then run the same test over Wi-Fi in the room where you have trouble. The gap between those two figures is your real problem, and no plan upgrade will close it.

Step two: move the router

Routers end up wherever the cable enters the house, which is usually a hallway corner, a cupboard, or the floor behind a television. Radio waves are absorbed by water, metal and masonry, and a router on the floor spends most of its output warming the carpet.

Put it as high and as central as the cable allows, out in the open, away from microwaves, cordless phone bases and large mirrors. This single change fixes more dead zones than any hardware purchase.

Step three: use the right band

Modern routers broadcast on multiple frequency bands. The 2.4 gigahertz band travels far and passes through walls but is slow and crowded. The 5 gigahertz band is much faster over shorter distances. The 6 gigahertz band is faster still and effectively empty, but it barely survives a single solid wall.

Devices that stay in one room should sit on the faster bands. Devices that roam, or that live at the far end of the house, belong on 2.4. If your router hides all of this behind a single network name and chooses badly, splitting the bands into separate names gives you back control.

Step four: mesh, not an extender

A classic range extender rebroadcasts the same signal and typically halves throughput to do it. A mesh system uses a dedicated link between nodes and hands devices off cleanly as you move. If one router genuinely cannot cover the house, mesh is the correct answer and extenders are a false economy.

Better still, if any wired connection is possible between floors, use it. A cabled mesh node is dramatically better than a wireless one.

Step five: prune the old devices

A single ancient device connecting at legacy speeds can slow an entire band while it talks. Check the connected device list, retire anything you no longer use, and give genuinely old equipment its own 2.4 network so it stops holding up everyone else.

Do these five things before calling the provider. Most of the time, the call is no longer necessary.
