A Cable Cut and a Continent Slowed: Lessons From the Latest Outage
Most of the internet still travels through a small number of physical cables. A recent failure showed how thin the redundancy really is.

It is easy to think of the internet as a cloud. It is mostly a few hundred cables lying on the seabed, each about the thickness of a garden hose, carrying essentially all intercontinental data traffic. When one breaks, the abstraction leaks.
What happens when a cable fails
Traffic reroutes automatically. That is the good news and the reason a cut rarely produces a total blackout. The bad news is what rerouting costs: latency rises as data takes a longer physical path, and the remaining cables absorb a load they were not provisioned for, producing congestion far from the break itself.
For users this shows up as slow video calls, timeouts on services hosted abroad, and applications that feel broken without any error message. Local browsing feels fine, which makes diagnosis confusing.
Why repairs take weeks
There are only a few dozen cable repair ships worldwide. A repair means locating the fault to within a few hundred metres, sending a vessel, grappling the cable off the seabed, hauling it aboard, splicing new fibre, testing, and lowering it back. Weather delays are routine and permits can be required. Three to six weeks is a normal timeline, not a failure of urgency.
The concentration problem
Cables cluster. Geography funnels them through a handful of chokepoints, and in several regions a small number of landing stations serve enormous populations. Anchors dragging in shallow water cause most damage, followed by fishing gear and undersea landslides. Deliberate damage is rare but no longer hypothetical, and it has moved the topic onto national security agendas.
What is being done
New routes are being funded specifically to avoid existing chokepoints, including longer and more expensive paths chosen for diversity rather than distance. Monitoring is improving, with operators now able to detect the acoustic signature of a cable being disturbed before it breaks. Some regions are mandating minimum route diversity for critical services.
What organisations should take from it
Redundancy on paper is not redundancy in practice if two providers use the same physical cable. Ask where your traffic goes, not just how many providers you have. Keep a degraded mode for essential services that works with high latency. And accept that for a few weeks a year, in some part of the world, the internet is going to be slower for reasons no software update can fix.
